Director of Strategy & Planning, Head of Data for U.S.
Professional Experience and Responsibilities
Alvaro Aguilar was named the Director of Strategy & Planning for BBVA Compass in 2010, a position that reports directly to BBVA Compass President and CEO Onur Genç. In his role, Aguilar is responsible for oversight of the bank’s corporate strategies and planning. Aguilar also serves as Chief of Staff to Genç.
Aguilar added the role of Head of Data for the U.S. to his slate of duties in July 2017. In this role, he is responsible for the implementation of BBVA’s global data strategy, the data governance model and the transformation of BBVA Compass’ analytics capabilities. Aguilar also oversees the BBVA Compass External Communications department.
Prior to his current role, Aguilar was the BBVA Compass Executive Vice President of Innovation and part of the Office of the Chairman for BBVA Compass. He was responsible for introducing and promoting the BBVA Group’s commitment to innovation in the U.S. and implementing key innovation initiatives.
Aguilar has been a member of the BBVA Group for nearly 20 years, initially joining in 1999. He has been a member of various departments across the organization, both in Spain and the U.S., including Corporate Business Development and Corporate Finance.
In 2009, BBVA Compass was awarded the “Innovation in Delivery Channel Technology” award by The Banker for its BBVA Compass Virtual Banker, a project managed by Aguilar.
Aguilar earned his undergraduate and master’s degrees in business administration from ESADE in Barcelona, Spain.
